This Celestron 10 x 42mm Granite ED roof prism is designed for those who want a good-performing high-power binocular (in what most birders regard as the most useful aperture/magnification pairing), but who don't want to pay a high price to get that performance. High price/high power binoculars are waterproof and fogproof. So too is the reasonably-priced Celestron 10x42mm Granite, which is O-ring sealed and nitrogen purged to shrug off unexpected summer showers and full downpours, just like high-end binoculars. High price binoculars use top quality BaK-4 roof prisms and multicoated ED glass optics for good high contrast images with very good color fidelity. So too does the reasonably-priced Celestron 10 x 42mm Granite ED.
The 10 x 42mm Granite's field is commendably flat. Images stay in focus from one side of the field to the other. Barrel distortion, the curving of straight lines at the edge of the field, is minimal. There is some minor chromatic aberration at the very edges of the field, but it is unnoticeable during most observing.
Is the Celestron Granite ED mechanically and optically the equal of the most expensive high end/high-power roof prism binoculars? Not quite. But it comes surprisingly close at a fraction the cost.
